Michael Jackson: Have Some Respect & Let Him R.I.P.!

Initially my posts today were going to be about unemployment and a few product reviews. However I just can't bring myself to focus on it. I honestly woke up not feeling like writing anything at all. But after certain acts following the death of Michael Jackson yesterday I have to express a few things. Normally I do not post about celebrities but when it comes to Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Aaliyah or Julia Roberts I must speak. You know me...can't let things go!

First let me just say that, whether you personally knew Michael Jackson or not, he is someone who touched many lives through his compassion and artistry. You do not have to know someone to have compassion and feel grief through their hardships or passing. If you feel the need to grieve, go ahead and do so, no one has the right to tell you how to feel. He was an amazing legend. Many say he was one of the greatest artists in music history, I stand to say he was THE greatest artist of all time. There has never been and never will be another Michael. He was not just a musician, he was so much more and he will be missed deeply. His artistry will continue on always.

Like many others, I feel like a piece of my childhood has been taken away. Why? Because I have clear memories of huge moments in my life with every Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 song ever made. Literally every song. I can remember the first time I saw The Wiz because my favorite artists, Diana Ross & Michael Jackson. I was so happy because it was a version of The Wizard of Oz with people that looked like me. I remember watching Moonwalker over & over again. When it was made into a video game by Sega, my brother and I begged for it and played it every day. My first jazz dance recital routine was to Black or White and it just so happens I was the only little black girl in the class.

But this post isn't about me, my memories or feeling of loss. It is about a lack of respect and human compassion some people have. As I write this it has not even been 24 hours since Michael Jackson's death was announced and certain media outlets have handled a human beings death like gossip. Making digs at his appearance, demeanor, style, past legal accusations and financial status.

Not even an hour after the announcement some were discussing legal issues he had years ago, legal issues that he was not convicted of. I find that disturbing as we have several high profile citizens accused of similar, if not worse crimes who are still alive today however their cases have blown over and were pretty much forgotten as soon as they were acquitted. Cases where proof of crime were present.

You have major news figures such as Nancy Grace and others asking about autopsy proceedings. This is not out of concern, it is merely due to wanting to uncover something negative. Wanting to be the first to break a juicy story. It is no secret that Nancy Grace is no Michael Jackson supporter since his trial years ago but you would still think she'd have some compassion for someone's death. He was found innocent so move on and stop persecuting him after death.

Then there is Perez Hilton who had a huge backlash to comments he made on Twitter yesterday. The comments were made while Michael was hospitalized, prior to reports of his death. After his death was announced, Perez made comments of condolences however the damage was already done. Anyone that reads Hilton's site knows he does have a heart, he's a joker and I have respected his advocacy for equal rights. Surely the backlash will blow over and maybe he meant no harm. But this should be a lesson to all that even making negative comments when someone is hospitalized is not a decent thing to do. It is not funny and it is not something you'd want done if you were fighting for your life. Shame on you Perez for your poor judgment, please learn from it and I sincerely hope any negative backlash is forgiven & forgotten quickly if you are truly sorry.

Comments are being made about his appearance, how it was abnormal. Who are we to say what is normal? Define normal please! I see plenty of people wearing things I'd never wear, but it's called personal style. OMG, Michael Jackson had plastic surgery! Too much? Again, who are we to say? People have cosmetic surgery all the time, especially high profile figures. Some have dozens. So if we're going to judge Michael then by all means we should judge them all!

I definitely want to talk about the change of his skin tone. He has said it is due to a skin condition and many people do not believe that. It's rumored that he bleached his skin. Maybe so, maybe not. I choose not to speculate. Because I know that he very well could have had a skin condition. I know it's possible because I have it myself! Not to the level that he did, at least not yet. However I do have a skin condition where I get small to medium sized patches of skin that lose all pigment. It happens quickly and is very noticeable.

The cause is unknown because I have not let my doctors perform testing to try to figure it out however I notice the use of milk and other high calcium products intensify the size and progression of my "patches". If it begins to get out of control I'll worry about it. Fortunately for me, this only happens on my face & arms, is not frequent and when it does occur my skin begins to return to it's normal color after about 6 months. I share this with you because it is important to remember that just because you have not heard of, experienced or seen something does not mean it can not be!

It just saddens me that we as human beings can take another human beings death and turn it into a media circus of "politely" bashing the person for anything negative that can be found. Many celebrities have passed, none led the life of saints and yet none were ridiculed after death the way Michael Jackson has been. The numerous accomplishments and acts of charity Michael Jackson performed were not mentioned by some media outlets until after all the controversy was discussed. Sad...

I must say that music networks such as MTV & BET have done a great job presenting memories, commentary and videos of the legacy that is Michael Jackson. That shows what an impact he's had on this earth. Think about it. When is the last time MTV has truly been about music? It's now flooded with shows like Room Raiders, True Life, etc. It took the death of Michael Jackson for MTV to consistently play music videos. I remember & miss the times when you could turn on MTV and watch videos and live performances all day with the exception of The Real World and Beavis & Butthead.

Let his family grieve, hope the best that life has to offer for his children, allow his fans to remember why they loved him and most importantly have respect for this man and let Michael Jackson R.I.P!

She Didn't Abandon Her Kids

About two years ago, my friend was having financial trouble up north. She was laid off, on unemployment and unable to secure a decent job. She went through her entire savings and borrowed as much as she could from family, her fiance and friends. Her utilities were disconnected and eventually she was evicted from her apartment. On top of all of that she has three kids.

To better the life of her kids and herself she moved to Tampa, FL where she could stay with her aunt rent free until she got on her feet. Her aunt lives in a small one bedroom apartment, therefore my friend would be sleeping on the sofa. Having no room and no way to afford child care while she worked, she sent the kids to stay with their father in CA. He agreed to keep them until she was ready for them to live with her again but they ended up staying at his mother's house.

She got a job after two weeks and sent money for the girls care each week. Two months later she moved with a friend into a 3 bedroom apartment. So she contacted her ex to arrange the pickup of the girls. You'd think this is where the happy ending comes but nope! Her ex was loving the money she was sending for the kids and wanted that to continue. He found out from a friend that he could possibly get more by making his custody official. He went to court to sue her for full custody. Well, if you know anything about custody hearings, you know that until the court renders a decision it's often ordered that the children reside in the state in which the case was filed. The court requested that she prove that she had adequate income, sufficient housing for the kids and would be the best parent for them to live with.

So she went back to Tampa, found a better job and began saving up. Now instead of voluntarily sending money from each check, it was automatically deducted from payroll. All she ever purchased for herself was soap, shampoo and other essentials as well as work attire. She signed a lease for a great four bedroom townhouse and slept on a $20 Walmart airbed for months until she was finished buying items for the kids rooms. She did it all on her own. She had to fly coast to coast for mediation, court dates and most importantly to visit her kids.

Her fiance later finished graduate school and moved to Tampa with her. Even though he wanted to have a baby and get married she wouldn't budge. She said they could be engaged but could not set a date. Her main focus was her kids. She called them everyday, worked during the week and alternated weekends with working overtime and visiting the girls. Anywho she regained full custody of her girls five months ago. She being the caring person she is has said she is willing to work out a visitation schedule for the father through the court system. Karma has it that her ex is now having financial issues amongst other things.

The girls have adjusted very well and I can tell they are so happy to be back with their mommy. She and her fiance set the date for a small wedding in September 2009. She messaged me this morning to tell me she found out a few days ago that she's expecting another baby in 7 months.

I asked her why she didn't want another baby or wouldn't set a wedding date before. Her answer: "I am all about my daughters, if they couldn't be there I wasn't getting married. They are my life, how could I go on without my babies? You don't leave your babies and start a new family without them. Good mothers don't do that, selfish females who give birth do! I didn't abandon my kids."

I have to say I was so proud of her fighting so hard for her kids and not putting anything or anyone before her goal. Now I know some may read this and wonder how she could move without them at all. I personally say I couldn't imagine doing that. But we'd have to be in her situation before we knock her down. Think about it, when she ran out of options would it have been better for her to take her kids to live in a shelter or send them with their dad temporarily?

My main reason for writing this was to put focus on the fact that she did not move away and forget about her kids, replace them or settle for being a mom that calls sometimes but is never physically around. She worked hard, tried to get them back right away and ran into an unfortunately long legal battle. But she never lost sight of what her priorities were. She didn't party, go to salons, shop, vacation or pamper herself in any way. And this is a chic who was very used to being glam! She told her fiance he would have to wait to marry her and have a baby. She flew coast to coast every other weekend to see her kids, flights from the east coast to the west can be very expensive. She only missed one visit due to having the flu and another because she couldn't afford the flight.

She and I share a strong belief that until you're doing right by the child or children you already have, you shouldn't have any more. She had three kids she needed to bring home and she was not going to move on in life without them. So now, not only do I love her as a friend, I respect her as a parent. I hope the kids father gets his life together eventually so the kids can have both parents in their lives. For all that she did to have her kids with her, I must say Iris, you're a great mom! See you in September darling, you're going to be a beautiful, glowing, preggo bride!

de-luxe BAIN Hawaiian Cane Sugar Scrub

The summer sun can do a serious number on our skin. Well I'm all about smooth, glowing skin! I've been using de-luxe BAIN Hawaiian Cane Sugar Scrub - Amber Vanilla and let me tell you, it's fabulously awesome! It gently exfoliates and soothes your skin leaving it feeling, soft, smooth and moisturized. The light fragrance is pleasant and won't attract bugs or clash with your perfume. My honey loves this stuff! And you know guys hate it when girls pile on products, but he doesn't mind this one at all. I even have him using it every once in a while, so ladies tell your man it's not just for girls!

I use it right before I get out of the shower and no longer need to use body lotion. Using it in the shower avoids a mess but be careful if you've got a slippery shower surface. I've never had any slippery issues but as with any in shower product you should use caution. I use this daily and it lasts me about one month. I just ordered my third shipment. You can get an 18 oz jar for $9.99 at Drugstore.com or try a price comparison site like PriceGrabber.com Try it out and say goodbye to dry, flaky skin and hola to soft, touchable skin!

My Girls Are The Best!

Sometimes things happen in life that just aren't right or your sad, hurt, mad, happy or excited. It's during those times that you see who your real friends and family are. It's when your girls are there by your side no matter what.

Last night I had to call my mini-me's Muffin (Jasmine) & Brooklyn to tell them some holiday plans changed. First let me say that these are my 17 & 18 year old cousins but we're so close that they are more like sisters. You can't tell these girls I'm not their big sister without fearing for your life! Anywho, I told them we couldn't go to a wedding because there was only room for one of them. My girls were such troopers about it! All they cared about was making sure I was fine with it. They felt so loved because I won't choose between them. They don't care what we do, they just wanted to be with me on the 4th of July like when they were kids and even joked on how we'd save money & have fun doing something local anyways. Although I may surprise them with a little road trip anyway...I'll run that by my honey first. And they're even willing to go with me to pick out a nice little gift to send to the couple. Now tell me how mature that is of them! By the way, Brooklyn just graduated high school, yay! I love my babies!

Then there is my Cristina. This girl lives in NJ but makes sure to stay in touch and visit. Even though we're in different states she is always here for me. When I had my car accident, got really sick, felt sad, had great news, felt bored, got laid off...she was there for me! Family trouble, she's there. Need support, she's there...even though she lives a bagillion miles away! That's my girl!

And I can't leave out my Florida girls! I've lived here 3 years and met some great people but that doesn't mean I never got homesick, missing family & friends. So many times I told my honey that I wanted to move back north even though I hate the cold weather...I missed my friends, I grew up with those people! But I'm happy where I am now and it's thanks to some really cool girls that remind me how awesome it is in the sunshine state and how cool people can be here. So shouts out to some fabulous ladies Teri, Lynne, Jonelle, Neesha, Anais, Monica, MC, Karlene, Andrea, Courtney, Rene, Brittany, Omy, Rachel, Diana, Junelle P and my super sweet south FL girl Katrina.

My girls are the best!

Cool Things That Ruin Relationships

I've composed a list of the top 5 "cool" things that can foolishly ruin relationships from the male and female perspective. From there I'll then list the top 3 overall potential relationship killers. This is mostly geared toward young adults but all ages can probably relate to a few if not all.

Top 5 From Male Perspective:

1. MySpace
2. Facebook
3. He's Just Not That Into You (the movie)
4. Excessive shopping
5. Clubbing

Top 5 From Female Perspective:

1. Myspace
2. He's Just Not That Into You (the movie)
3. Single friends
4. Video Games
5. Clubbing

Top 3 Overall:

1. Myspace
2. He Just Not That Into You (the movie)
3. Clubbing

Overview:

Myspace - Myspace causes drama. The end.

He's Just Not That Into You - Many girls say they started analyzing everything their men did after watching this movie, guys agree that their girls became very paranoid after the movie.

Excessive shopping - Guys say they want a girl that is into more than just shopping. It is too much drama when it causes financial issues. Also it is well known that money is among the top reasons for divorce!

Single friends - Ladies say some of their man's single friends cause drama because they encourage them to remain single...the partner in crime.

Video games - Girls say it's fine to play video games but there is a limit. A grown man should not pay attention to playing video games more than he pays attention to his woman...unless he is being payed for it!

Clubbing - Many couples cannot club together without jealousy drama over someone looking at or conversing with their mate. Some also do not have enough trust for their honey to have guys or girls night out.

Summary of Top 3 Overall:

He's Just Not That Into You (the movie): Sure sometimes signs are there and maybe it's a cool movie, but to start analyzing every little thing your man does or says just because of this movie is the sign of an insecure, vulnerable and/or impressionable person. Trust your own instincts and make up your own mind. If you just feel you need a guide, pick up a copy of Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man by Steve Harvey ($11.00 at Walmart.com). It's a good and entertaining read and probably more informative and valuable than the "relationship killer" movie.

Myspace & Clubbing: If you're the overly jealous type you shouldn't be on each others Myspace pages or clubbing together. If you can't trust your honey to go out with their friends without you, that's a trust problem. If you're logging into your honey's Myspace, email and/or checking phone messages either you're nosy or you have a trust issue. Even if your honey gave you a reason to be suspicious, my motto is "No trust, no relationship"! If you can't trust them you shouldn't be with them. Just because you know someones password doesn't mean you should snoop...it's a violation of privacy, waste of your time and makes you appear like the psycho girlfriend that your honey's friends probably say you are!
